Logan Shaw of Ellis, Kansas, often hears that he’s lucky that his education and connections made at the University of Nebraska at Kearney helped him land a career with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Grand Island.

Shaw earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from 体育菠菜大平台 in May 2023. Now, just a year and a half later, he’s preparing to walk across the stage again – this time to receive his master’s in business administration.

With his second graduation from 体育菠菜大平台 just around the corner, Shaw admits there might be some truth to the idea of luck.

“It might be luck,” he said with a shrug.

One of the most impactful connections he made during his undergraduate years was with Dustin Favinger, senior director of career development and graduate programs for the College of Business and Technology. Favinger encouraged Shaw to enroll in 体育菠菜大平台’s MBA program and apply for a graduate assistantship position. 
 

“The financial benefit is great,” Shaw said of his GA role. “It covers a lot of tuition – especially for me being out of state. And then we still get paid on top of that.”

Graduate school wasn’t initially in Shaw’s plans, but a conversation with Favinger changed his mind.

“I personally liked it more than undergrad because it was less like busywork,” Shaw said. “Sometimes in undergrad, you get just homework, homework, homework. But the applicable stuff is a lot more interesting to me.”

“During my MBA I got an internship with the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation), and I'm going to start with them full time after I graduate,” Shaw said.

Shaw credits both the internship and career to the strong connections he built with Favinger. At 体育菠菜大平台’s career fair, while working the MBA booth, Favinger encouraged Shaw to step away and network with employers at the event. That decision led him to his internship and career at FDIC.
